What does a typical postpartum shift look like?

Postpartum support is unique to every family! Most contracts start at 15 hours and people usually break them up into 5 hour increments. It falls into the same doula scope: physical, emotional, and informational.

I would say an "average" shift looks something like: I arrive shortly before baby is set to eat and go over how the last 24 hours or so have been. I might start the dishwasher and a load of laundry while you get settled in to feed baby, then sit with you to assess how feeding is going. If we need to troubleshoot anything feeding wise, we usually have 2 chances to do so if I'm there for 5 hours. Then I'll make sure you have eaten and if you want to take a shower, I can help you do that (if you're very early on it's definitely helpful to have someone close by) or hang with baby while you take an everything shower and reset. Often times parents want to take the opportunity to sleep for a longer stretch, so baby can hang with me while I get a few things done around the house! Tidying up, folding laundry, washing bottle/pump parts, meal prep, etc. Sometimes there are things that you want an extra set of hands for, such as giving baby a bath or learning how to use a baby carrier. We can always do those things too and of course go over any questions you might have about baby or your postpartum healing! Other times, families just need a listening ear for an extended period, someone to hold baby while you sleep, or an extra set of hands so you feel like you can do things around the house to feel human again.
